Humanities
This week we explored the last story from the “strange and mysterious” called The Landlady by Roald Dahl. You might know him from his stories like James and the Giant Peach, The BFG, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Throughout the week we worked on the following skills: vocab, comprehension, irony, foreshadowing, tone, mood, and suspense. They viewed an interpretation of the story for analysis. The quiz was today and scores will be posted soon.
Another group read The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. This is another story that incorporated an unreliable narrator like The Tell-Tale Heart. The group investigated irony and also did a mini research component. You will be able to view their work soon. They are showcasing the story by creating a website.
Humanities Grades
I have been updating Skyward with grades. Please make sure to check in if you have any questions. If there is a zero, your child needs to see me after school to check the missing work. At that time, I will enter it directly to Skyward. If it is still a zero, they have not stayed to check their work with me.
Writing - same as last week
We are still working on the narrative productions. They will be viewed on March 30th and 31st. Students need to have a completed product to share in the viewing. Feel free to have your children share their final product with you before it is due. Maybe you can give them some valuable feedback. :) This week we also worked on argument writing and incorporating it into the Article of the Week assignment. The written reflection will be due on Monday the 13th.

Math
Math 8
This past week in Math 8, we started learning about linear equations. We refreshed our memory on slope and the different ways to find it. We also learned about two different types of linear equations: direct variation and slope-intercept form. The expectation was that 5.1-5.3 homework would have been turned in by Friday, so those are going into the gradebook. This next week, we’ll continue our study of linear equations in Chapter 5 by learning about one other form: point-slope form. There’s a quiz scheduled for Wednesday on the sections 5.1-5.4, and then Thursday the students will learn about the relationships between the linear equations we’ve learned and parallel and perpendicular lines on the coordinate plane.
Algebra 1
At this point, everyone is pretty much either in Chapter 7, Chapter 8, or has moved to Geometry already. The schedule has the students finishing Chapter 8 at the end of this past week (March 10th-ish) or at the beginning of this next week. For those students who have not moved to Geometry, we’ve made 2 groups - those finishing chapter 7 and those finishing chapter 8 - so that each group can focus more on where they are at. As mentioned often, it is okay to be slightly behind the given pacing; as long as the students successfully meets all the Algebra requirements and learns all the content by the end of the school year, it’s okay to be at a slightly different pace. For those who are at the end of Chapter 8, Mrs. Kastengren is having a study session after school on Monday (March 13th) for Chapter 8, and the REACH Algebra students are welcome to join!
