Literature Focus
This week we explored a story from the “strange and mysterious” called The Monkey’s Paw by WW Jacobs. Throughout the week we worked on the following skills: vocab, comprehension, allusion, foreshadowing, tone, mood, and suspense. They also had an ending to view and analyze of the story. Next week, we will be reading The Landlady by Roald Dahl.
Another group worked on using the three mysterious stories we have read and combining them into one project to extend their learning. This group will share their projects on Tuesday and then be moving on to two other stories that fit this topic.
Writing
We are still working on the narrative productions. They will be viewed on March 30th and 31st. Students need to have a completed product to share in the viewing. Feel free to have your children share their final product with you before it is due. Maybe you can give them some valuable feedback. :) This week we also worked on argument writing and incorporating it into the Article of the Week assignment. The written reflection will be due on Monday the 13th.

Math 8
You know that song by Bon Jovi called “Livin’ on a prayer”? We’ll we’re not just livin’ on a prayer here, but the part that says “whoa, we’re halfway there” was in my mind this week. Even though we are already at least halfway through Quarter 3, all students reviewed for and took the “halfway point” exam from chapters 1-4. The reason it’s much later than the end of Semester 1 is that the content from the “first half” in chapters 1-4 is a fair amount more than the content in chapters 5-8. Looking ahead to the remainder of the year, Math 8 students will be learning about slope and linear equations (just started that this week for most students as well), systems of linear equations, Volume, Transformations, and the Pythagorean Theorem. I think students will enjoy the mix of some algebra and some geometry, and I look forward to seeing their learning!
Algebra 1
As mentioned previously, we have a very diverse group of Algebra students in the REACH program who happen to be all at difference places - mostly based on consistency in work ethic. I was very pleased to see some major improvement in work ethic from a number of students in the past two weeks, and I think it is reflected in the grades as well. One thing I want to point out again is that, as long as there is the good work ethic, students can be at different paces and still complete Algebra. I have the pacing guide that was given to students weeks ago and remind them of it weekly, because they really should be keeping up with that guide. However, if your child is a couple sections ahead or a few behind, that will not make or break their year. There is a little extra time at the end of the semester built in for making up a few sections if need be, because students do pick different math concepts up at different rates. Feel free to contact me if you’re concerned about your child’s pacing!
Geometry
One of our students was working diligently this week on the different transformations and rigid motions on the coordinate plane, while the other student finished up learning the important tools of Geometry and moving on to learning about reasoning and proof. Both are doing well!
